You have been scammed!

Imagine yourself browsing the internet just as you are now and the phone rings. The conversation will go something like this.
*Ring*
You: "Hello?"
Caller: "Hello this is Microsoft calling you, our system indicates that your computer is infected with viruses"
You: "Oh, no! are you serious? What, how? What do I do?
Caller: "I can help you get rid of the virus"
You: "Really? Oh wow I am glad you called then!
Caller: "Yes first who do I have the pleasure of talking to today?"
You: "This is (insert your name, we will call you Sue"
Caller: Ok thank you Sue, are you in front of your computer?
You: Yes
Caller: Ok I need you to go to your browser and go to (website), you will need to download software so I can log in"
You: Ok I have downloaded the software
Caller: Very good now I am going to look at your computer. Oh my there are so many viruses, we can remove them from your computer for $249"
You: Wow that is very expensive, you said you were from Microsoft?"
Caller: Yes I am from Microsoft, I will need your credit card to make the payment and fix the virus"
You: Well ok if you say so...

It seems so unrealistic, but it happens everyday, a scammer calls and convinces you that you have a virus and they are there to fix it. (How convenient for you)
In fact Microsoft has over 12,000 reports of scams in their name a month!
The phone call is just one way scammers use to get your information. Sometimes there is a popup that says you have a virus and it tells you to call them. Some call themselves Microsoft, but they claim to be Norton, AVG, McAfee etc. They will say anything to get you to pay them to "fix" your computer.
Here are the facts:

  1.  You do not have a virus in most cases
  2. If you have a virus or malware it is because the scammer put it there.
  3. If you give them your credit card number, your card number is likely to be sold and used on the internet in seconds.
  4. If you give them access to your computer they will search and find your banking information, social security number and other sensitive data.
If you receive a call from a scammer hang up right away.
