Why the FBI wants you to restart your router? And why it won't help...

Image
Last Friday the United States Justice Department released a statement telling everyone to restart their routers. This is quite alarming to many because most everyone thinks that viruses are common issues that are just like the cold for humans. However Malware and Viruses are usually launched for malicious things such as this attack to help a government attack or overthrow another government. While it seems like a spy show plot it happens more often than you think. Scary right?  So how does restarting your router stop the attack? Restarting your router doesn't stop the attack rather it disconnects the Malware that is on it and weakens the Bot net system that the Malware uses to function. (Botnet a network of private computers infected with malicious software and controlled as a group without the owners' knowledge, e.g., to send spam messages.) The more disruptions the better. The more likely the FBI will be able to find vulnerabilities and bring down the Malware. Resta...

What is GDPR?

Image
GDPR, everyone is talking about it. If you are subscribed to any service you have gotten an email about it.  At a minimum I have received 50 emails regarding GDPR. What does GDPR stand for? "General Data Protection Regulation" What is it? The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) (EU) 2016/679 is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union and the European Economic Area. It also addresses the export of personal data outside the EU and EEA. 1. GDPR effects you if you live or do business in countries that are apart of the European Union. 2. Its a big deal because the internet is every where and it is very easy for everyone to do business in the European Union even if your company is not located there. 3. Essentially GDPR is a regulation that tells companies how they can collect your personal data, what they can do with it , and that they have to disclose this all to you. That is of course if you allow them to do...

The Content Creators are Making Cyber-Security Harder

Image
Listen up content creators your content is making cyber-security harder. What is a content creator? These are marketing professionals that work for companies putting up facebook posts, or blog posts for that company. While this is a great idea, I am concerned for security of many people because of the knowledge of such creators. If you are a content creator, how do you know what you are writing about?  Many content creators are well versed in marketing, not whatever they are writing about. The creators of the content need to be experts to create real content. Why is it important to be an expert? Let's look at some scenarios. I googled just now "Roofing Companies Cleveland Ohio". I don't need a roofing company today but lets say I do. I'm gonna now click on the first roofing company website that is on the Google first page. When you are on the first page of Google this means you are relevant, lots of people go to this site and your site has lots of content. S...

5 Key items for your churches IT

I have worked in church IT since the beginning of my IT career. First it was because I was the young guy and I knew a thing or two and then it was my profession. There have been many instances of frustrations out of this type of support. I want to give church leaders a taste of how to alleviate issues in IT while not destroying the budget. 5 Key items for your churches IT 1. Cheap is not better Do you have an IT pro in your congregation? If so consult with them long before you buy anything. Many leaders will go to a big box store and get a new computer that is cheap and then talk to the IT pro. Generally the issue with the item you bought is that the item is not capable of what you need it to do. 2. You need to budget for IT I'm sorry it is not 2001 anymore. Computers are here for good and we need them for everything. When it comes to church work we need computers. Many churches now have dozens of computers running during the services. One break down, one failure during se...
