Why Backing up saves so many headaches

I received a call from a customer last week telling me their car was broken into. Now this is not a usual call I receive and further into the story they told me the very computer I worked on here in our shop had been stolen.
To give you some more context we did a major rescue on this particular computer of files and pictures. However my customer found themselves back in the same situation that they were in when they brought their computer to me almost 1 year ago. They could not access their files now because a thief has stolen their computer. More than likely they will never see the computer again. And even though insurance was taking care of the cost of the computer, the family photos and college essays were gone. Or were they? Well that was the real purpose of this call. You see since we did the major rescue of the files we keep a copy of them for a limited time on our servers here at DataCom.
And upon investigation we actually still had a copy of the files and are able to restore a good portion of what was lost. I love happy endings.
Friends stop here and think about it. This could happen to you! What do you have on your computer that if stolen, burned up, hardware failure, that would be devastating?  I cannot stress enough, backup, backup, backup!!! And don't back up on your machine! Backup on a cloud! Even an external harddrive or thumb drive is not enough. External harddrives may be taken out in a house fire or stolen along with your other electronics. Unfortunately DataCom at this moment does not have a cloud backup service. However after this story it makes me want to invest in one. However there are so many free options out there!
